Baugesellschaft Michelsohn Baumi: the single-cylinder crude-oil tractor from the 1920s, 7,917 cm³ displacement, 16 hp at 460 rpm and an 8 km/h top speed
The Baumi was built from 1923 to 1927 and is thus among the early motorised farm tractors of the 1920s, a time when the tractor was only beginning to displace the horse-drawn team in agriculture.

The engine is a single-cylinder of 7,917 cm³ displacement, producing 16 hp at just 460 rpm and running on crude oil or heavy oil; cooling is by an evaporative cooler. The tractor is 2,800 mm long, 1,600 mm wide, has a wheelbase of 1,620 mm, weighs 3,450 kg and reaches a top speed of 8 km/h.
A single, very large-volume cylinder at low speed running on crude oil is typical of the semi-diesel hot-bulb engines of the 1920s, which ran on heavy, cheap oil without the precision of an injection pump, and were robust and simple to maintain in return. At 8 km/h, the tractor was built for pure fieldwork, not for transport on the road. The low engine speed also meant lower mechanical loads, which, given the simple materials of the period, extended the engine's service life.
A vehicle of this age is today primarily a collector's piece; on acquisition, what matters is the condition of the cylinder and the evaporative cooler, whether the hot bulb or ignition device still works, and rust on the frame and sheet-metal parts after nearly a century. It is also worth assessing whether the original wheels and fittings have survived, since their absence considerably complicates the vehicle's historical documentation. Spare parts are practically no longer available through regular trade, only through collectors and reproduction.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
- Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
- Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
