Am General Hummer – the collective page of the civilian HMMWV derivative HUMMER (H1) and military variants such as the M1123 from South Bend, Indiana: eight-cylinder engines, 6,000 to 6,500 cm³, gross weights up to 5

This collective page gathers the vehicles that AM General lists in the register under the name HUMMER. AM General of South Bend, Indiana, developed the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV, pronounced Humvee) for the US military in the 1980s, an off-road four-wheel-drive carrier with independent suspension on all four wheels. In 1992 AM General launched a civilian version of the HMMWV under the name HUMMER, renamed H1 in 1999 after General Motors acquired the HUMMER brand rights; AM General remained the maker of the H1 until production ended in 2006. The M1123 in the register denotes one of the military HMMWV variants, an extended troop- and cargo-carrier.

The register lists 5 versions with 125 to 291 kW from eight-cylinder engines of 6,000 to 6,500 cm³ displacement, unladen weights from 2,350 to 3,400 kg and gross weights from 3,901 to 5,488 kg; lengths range from 4,690 to 5,120 mm, widths from 1,910 to 2,220 mm.

The HUMMER/H1 is regarded as the civilian symbol of the Gulf War military vehicle and became as well known for its extreme off-road capability as for its high fuel consumption; as a niche vehicle built in low numbers it always remained a special case alongside the mass-market models of the US off-roader makers.

On a used HUMMER/H1, the condition of the portal axles and central tyre-inflation system, rust on the aluminium body and the steel frame, the mileage of the eight-cylinder engine, and the availability of the military wear parts all count; parts run through specialist HUMMER dealers and through AM General itself.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
