The machine is 3,165 mm long, 1,321 mm wide and 1,937 mm high. The unladen weight is 1,241 kg. The wheelbase measures 2,083 mm. Top speed is 18 km/h. The tank holds 59 litres. Transmission: 4 V/1 R. The engine is water-cooled. Tyres: front 5.00 x 15, rear 10 x 24. The fuel is petrol. The bore measures 85.73 mm. The stroke is 88.9 mm. Construction: frame construction. The gearbox offers 4 forward gears. There are also 1 reverse gears. Around 39.500 units were built. The C-Baureihe series covers 3 models. Rated output within it ranges from 15.5 to 23.3 hp; the MODELL - CA sits at the top of that range with 23.3 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the MODELL - C below it with 18.7 hp. Unladen weight within it ranges from 998 to 1,817 kg; here the MODELL - CA sits in the lower part of that range with 1,241 kg. 220 Allis Chalmers models across 18 series are on record.

Allis-Chalmers Model C, CA and RC – four-cylinder tractors from Milwaukee 1940 to 1949, 2,053 cm³ displacement, 11.4 to 17.1 kW, 998 to 1,817 kg unladen weight

Allis-Chalmers of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, built the Model C from 1940 to 1949 as a light general-purpose tractor for smaller farms; the CA development followed in the 1950s, RC denotes a further version of the same series. All three types share the same four-cylinder engine of 2,053 cm³ displacement. The narrow, tall chassis allowed the tractor to straddle a row of plants without damaging the crop, as befits the row-crop tractor design.

The register lists 3 versions with 11.4 to 17.1 kW (15.5 to 23.3 hp) from four-cylinder engines of a constant 2,053 cm³ displacement at 1,500 to 1,650 rpm, run on kerosene or petrol blends. Unladen weights range from 998 to 1,817 kg, lengths from 2,800 to 3,554 mm, widths from 1,321 to 1,740 mm and heights from 1,727 to 1,949 mm.

As a light, manoeuvrable general-purpose tractor for row crops and smaller acreages, the Model C was aimed at family farms that had not yet switched to the large field tractors of the competition; the series is among the most widely built early Allis-Chalmers types. The narrow front axle with closely spaced wheels served precise steering between plant rows during cultivating and tending work.

When buying used, what counts is the condition and compression of the four-cylinder engine, carburettor and ignition system, clutch and gearbox, and corrosion on panels and frame; parts for this widespread series are well available through specialist vintage tractor dealers.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
