With its Detroit Diesel power the 9400 series differed technically from the other AGCO Allis ranges and targeted large arable farms that valued high pulling power in a classic standard-tractor layout. In 2001 AGCO dropped the AGCO Allis and AGCO White brands in favour of the corporate AGCO brand; the group had already acquired Massey Ferguson in 1994.

The turbocharged six-cylinder diesel predated the later European emissions stages with exhaust gas recirculation, particulate filters and SCR technology, which were only mandated for tractors of this class from the 2000s onward.
