Aebi AM – the Swiss motor mowers from Burgdorf: two-wheel tractors AM 7 to AM 90, 3 to 10 kW, for hillside meadows and mountain farms
AM stands for Aebi Motormäher: the two-wheel tractors with which Aebi of Burgdorf in the canton of Bern has mown the mountain meadows of Switzerland, Austria and southern Germany since the 1950s. Aebi had built farm machinery since 1883 and with the motor mower became the embodiment of alpine farm technology – where no tractor can stand, an AM mows across the slope with a cutter bar. The range covers small machines such as the AM 7, 8, 9 and 10 with single-cylinder petrol engines, the medium AM 15 to AM 42 and the large AM 50 to AM 90 of the 1970s and 1980s, which also received diesels and served as transporters with a trailer. Later Aebi continued the programme as the CC series (Combicut).

The type number rises with size and output. In the register the models run from 3.3 to 10.3 kW (7 to 14 hp), 212 to 550 cm³ with one or two cylinders and weights from 110 to 320 kg; 15 of the 18 models with a fuel entry run on petrol, three optionally on diesel. The engines came from suppliers such as MAG, Hirth, Bernard and later Kubota and Lombardini.
The motor mower is a tool carrier: cutter bar for mowing, belt rake, hay pusher, snow blower, plough, load platform and trailer hitch swap on the same PTO. Aebi's 'Hang' (slope) suffix meant differential lock, cage wheels and a low centre of gravity for inclines up to 40 degrees.
Used old AMs are common and cheap, good examples with attachments sought after. When buying, engine condition (compression, ignition on magneto types), gearbox and clutch, the mower with knife and fingers and the cage or lug wheels are what count.
