The span runs from O2 trailers at the 3.5-tonne threshold to semi- or centre-axle trailers of class O4 with a 38-tonne gross weight, as used in semi-trailer or draw-bar combinations. On a used trailer, the lighter versions call for checking the overrun brake and coupling head, the heavy ones the air-brake system with ABS or EBS, the kingpin or the pintle hook with drawbar eye, the axles and brake drums or discs for wear, and the frame and load floor for rust. On the long versions over 10 metres it is also worth checking the frame around the axle mounts, where sustained load first shows as cracks. It is also worth tracing the inspection history and any previous frame repairs before buying.
