Reclassifying estates as commercial vehicles was a widespread practice in several European countries to avoid higher tax rates or registration restrictions for passenger cars, and at Volvo it concerned above all the sturdy 700 and 900 series estates known for high mileages; the XC90 marked the brand's entry into the SUV segment in 2002 and became one of its defining models.

On used estates registered as commercial vehicles, rust on wheel arches, sills and load floor, and the condition of the rear leaf springs under load count; on the early LV-series trucks, the frame, brakes and the availability of parts through specialists; on the XC90, the automatic transmission, four-wheel-drive clutch and turbocharger. Parts run through the Volvo network and marque-specific classic-vehicle dealers.
