TDI stands for turbo direct-injection diesel, a technology Volkswagen introduced in 1989 first in its cars and shortly afterwards in the Transporter; Syncro denoted permanent four-wheel drive with a viscous coupling on the T3 and T4, replaced by the 4Motion name from the T5 onwards. Model names of the panel-van, combi, pick-up and Caravelle versions usually state the engine directly, as displacement in litres or as a TDI suffix with a four-wheel-drive tag.

The VW Transporter has set the benchmark in Europe's large panel-van segment for decades and is used equally by trades, retail and motorhome converters; the TDI versions with Syncro or 4Motion are common in mountain rescue, forestry and winter site traffic, where rivals such as the Mercedes Vito/Sprinter or Ford Transit rarely offered permanent four-wheel drive.
When buying used, check the turbocharger and intercooler of the TDI engines, the condition of the viscous coupling and transfer case on Syncro/4Motion versions, corrosion at the strut mounts and sliding-door sills, and the mileage on the dual-mass flywheel; spare parts are widely available through the dense VW commercial-vehicle network and independent parts trade.
