Volkswagen Umpikorinen (BB)

The register lists 20 versions with four- and five-cylinder engines from 1,490 to 2,799 cm³ and 55 to 128 kW, kerb weights from 970 to 2,300 kg, gross vehicle weights from 1,700 to 3,000 kg, lengths from 4,200 to 6,540 mm and widths from 1,635 to 1,930 mm.

As a closed panel van, the Transporter was the backbone of trade, postal and delivery work in Finland as across Europe; the Umpikorinen register class groups all commercial vehicles with a fixed box body regardless of wheelbase. The T3 and T4 are two technically quite different generations, differing above all in handling, load volume and servicing effort.

Buying a used T3, check for corrosion at the sills, wheel arches and floor pan and the condition of the rear engine's cooling; on the T4, check the diesel engines' timing belt, the subframes and, on four-wheel-drive versions, the viscous coupling. Clutch, axle boots and sliding-door seals belong on the checklist for both generations; wear parts are well supplied through the independent parts trade.
