The register lists 17 versions with four- and six-cylinder engines from 32 to 75 kW and 1,490 to 2,461 cm³, kerb weights from 970 to 2,600 kg, gross vehicle weights from 2,070 to 3,000 kg, lengths from 4,280 to 5,060 mm and widths from 1,720 to 2,020 mm.

The mix of T2 and LT panel vans shows the brand's shift from the air-cooled light van of the 1970s to the water-cooled light truck of the 1970s to 1990s, partly co-developed with Mercedes-Benz components; the LT, offered with several wheelbases and roof heights, covered the segment from tradesman's vehicle to small furniture van before the Crafter replaced it.

When buying used, the T2 needs checking for corrosion at the wheel arches and load floor and the condition of the boxer engine, while the LT additionally needs its timing belt or chain, rear axle condition and, on Syncro versions, the viscous coupling of the four-wheel-drive system; sill and wheel-arch corrosion is the classic weak point on both ranges. Parts for the LT remain well supported through independent suppliers.
