Volkswagen LT – a large van range for minibus and motorhome bodies: six-cylinder diesel of 2,799 cm³ and 80 kW, 5,170 kg gross weight, 110 km/h top speed, built 1975 to 2006
Volkswagen built the LT as a large van range above the better-known VW Bus/Transporter, across two generations between 1975 and 2006. The LT designation stands for Lastentransporter (load transporter); besides panel vans, numerous minibus and motorhome bodies from independent builders were also produced on the chassis.

This version of the LT is powered by a six-cylinder diesel engine of 2,799 cm³ and 80 kW, with a kerb weight of 3,580 kg and a gross vehicle weight of 5,170 kg. The vehicle is 7.54 m long, 2.35 m wide, has a wheelbase of 4.03 m, runs on six wheels and reaches a top speed of 110 km/h.
At a gross weight of around 5.2 tonnes and with dual rear wheels, this LT was among the larger versions of the range, serving more as the base for minibuses, motorhomes or light truck bodies than for plain panel-van use. This weight class already required a higher licence category in Europe than the ordinary category B used for cars.
For a used LT of this weight class, check for corrosion on the frame, springs and dual axle, the condition of the clutch and gearbox, the diesel engine's tightness at the injection pump and head gasket, and, depending on the body, the structural condition of minibus or motorhome conversions. Parts for the drivetrain remain well available through the Volkswagen commercial-vehicle dealer network and independent workshops.
