The 8400 is powered by a six-cylinder diesel engine of 6,593 cm³ displacement, delivering 103 kW (140 hp) and 520 Nm of torque at 2,200 rpm. At an unladen weight of 5,040 kg, a wheelbase of 2,558 mm and a top speed of 30 km/h, the tractor is a strong representative of the upper power class of its time.
Six-cylinder tractors of this power class handled heavy soil cultivation in the 1990s through the three-point linkage to ISO 730 and drove large implements through the 540 or 1,000 rpm power take-off. The high torque of 520 Nm at a moderate rated speed provided powerful pulling without constantly revving the engine.
On a used 8400 from this long production run, it is worth pinning down the exact build year from the chassis number, since equipment and technology could change over eleven years of production. The six-cylinder engine should also be checked for oil consumption, and the clutch for wear. Hoses and lines should also be checked for material fatigue after so many years of service. A test drive and a check of every lever and control also belong to a thorough inspection. The overall condition of the paint and sheet metal also gives clues about how the machine was stored over the years.
