The register lists here 5 versions with 39 to 66.2 kW from three- to four-cylinders of 3,298 to 4,397 cc, unladen weights from 2,670 to 3,760 kg, lengths from 3,710 to 4,515 mm, widths from 1,965 to 2,130 mm and heights from 2,460 to 2,690 mm, torque from 198 to 325 Nm at rated speeds of 2,150 to 2,350 rpm.

Valmet built its tractors at the Suolahti plant in central Finland, supplying mainly the Finnish and Scandinavian market; the 55 series covered the medium power class for the forestry and farming operations there. The parallel two- and four-wheel-drive versions let buyers choose, depending on the application, between economy and traction, depending on whether the work was mainly in the field or in the forest.

On the 55 series, what counts is the condition and compression of the three- or four-cylinder diesel, the condition of the four-wheel-drive clutch on the -4 models, the tightness of the hydraulics and lift, and rust on the cab and mudguards; parts today run through the successor network of Valtra.
