UTB's Universal range from Brașov comprises, with the U 445 and U 650/651, two very differently sized tractors from the same base family: the smaller three-cylinder U 445 and the four-cylinder U 650/651, whose simple, rugged design made it the most widely built Romanian tractor of all, exported worldwide in the millions.

The U 650 in particular, as a rugged, easily repaired universal tractor, shaped agriculture across much of Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia, and remains in practical use in many countries today, while the smaller U 445 served smaller holdings and specialist crops.
Buying one of these simple diesels, compression and the condition of the injection pump matter, along with wear on the clutch and gearbox, the state of the rear axle and brakes, and rust on the frame and wings; parts, especially for the widely used U 650, are comparatively easy to find through Eastern European farm-machinery dealers, reflecting the sheer number of these tractors still in service.
