The U-550 (DT) is powered by a four-cylinder diesel engine of 3,119 cm³ displacement, delivering 38.3 kW (52 hp) and 177 Nm of torque at 2,400 rpm. At an unladen weight of 2,315 kg, a wheelbase of 2,060 mm and a top speed of 23 km/h, the tractor is a light, four-wheel-drive all-purpose tractor, at a ratio of roughly 60 kg of weight per kW.
Four-wheel drive substantially increases pulling power on slippery or loose ground for tractors of this size, which is why DT variants were preferred over the simpler rear-drive models for heavier soils and sloped terrain, at otherwise identical engine output and similar fuel consumption.
On a used U-550 (DT), besides the engine and clutch, the front axle and its four-wheel-drive components deserve particular attention, since the transfer case and joints are the most vulnerable parts on four-wheel-drive tractors of this era after years of field work on heavy soil. Here too, parts for Utb models are only available to a limited extent outside Romania, and the brakes deserve close, thorough inspection after decades of use before any purchase.
