The 8180 a also belonged to the 80er-Baureihe that Steyr Daimler Puch ran in the 1980s as its upper power segment; the SDP/SLT designation refers to the internal grouping of this series in the last years before the tractor division became independent.

The 8180 a is powered by a six-cylinder diesel engine of 6,596 cm³ displacement, delivering 117.8 kW (160 hp) at 2,200 rpm. At an unladen weight of 6,012 kg, a wheelbase of 2,700 mm and a top speed of 30 km/h, it is the stronger of the two six-cylinder variants in this series, at a ratio of roughly 51 kg of weight per kW.

Sharing the same displacement as the lower-tuned 8165 a but with more power, the 8180 a shows how one six-cylinder engine covered different power levels through different tuning. Tractors like this pulled heavy cultivation equipment on the three-point linkage to ISO 730 and drove implements through the 540 or 1,000 rpm power take-off, from ploughs to large balers and forage wagons on bigger farms.

On a used 8180 a, besides the engine and clutch, the injection pump should be checked, since the higher power tuning at the same displacement means more load on the injection system over the machine's working life. Tyre condition given the substantial overall weight and many years of possible use also deserves attention.
