Stalingrad GB-58: four-cylinder crawler tractor with wood-gas drive, 54 hp output, 6,000 kg weight and a five-speed gearbox

The Stalingrad Tractor Factory (STZ) counted among the large Soviet plants building tractors in great numbers as part of the interwar industrialisation drive. The GB-58 sits on the collective page for further models from this factory and is built as a crawler tractor with wood-gas drive.

The GB-58 is powered by a water-cooled four-cylinder engine running on wood, peat, anthracite or charcoal as fuel, producing 54 hp at 1,400 rpm. Drive is transmitted through tracks rather than wheels, and a five-speed gearbox with one reverse gear is fitted. At a weight of 6,000 kg, the tractor reaches a design top speed of 7.43 km/h.

A wood-gas drive able to burn peat, anthracite or charcoal as well as wood needed an additional gasifier along with a bunker for whichever solid fuel was used, making everyday operation more cumbersome than with a diesel or petrol engine. The track drive provided pulling force and low ground pressure on soft or difficult terrain, as found across large parts of the Soviet Union at the time.

A vehicle of this design and this age is today found essentially only as a collector's or museum piece. At inspection, the completeness of the wood gasifier and its ancillary equipment, the condition of the track undercarriage and the functioning of the five-speed gearbox count among the most important points.
