Aluminium construction weighs less than a steel frame for the same payload and does not rust, an advantage particularly for boat trailers that are regularly submerged wheel-deep in water. The market for such trailers is strongly seasonal and serves both private boat and watersports owners and charter operators.

When buying used with an aluminium frame, check for cracks at the welds and contact corrosion at steel-to-aluminium transitions, especially at the axle mounts. Wheel bearings should be inspected particularly carefully and re-greased regularly due to frequent water contact; spare parts for axles and brakes come from the general trailer trade, while special aluminium parts more often come from the manufacturer itself.
