The 1917 Seograve fire truck: a six-cylinder engine, a 5,515 kg gross vehicle weight and a payload of only around 675 kilograms because of the fixed firefighting body
The Seograve fire truck from 1917 belongs among the early motorised firefighting vehicles, from a time when fire departments were switching from horse-drawn teams to the combustion engine. The six-cylinder engine drives a four-wheel chassis with a wheelbase of 4,050 mm and a width of 2,080 mm.

With a gross vehicle weight of 5,515 kg and a kerb weight of 4,840 kg, only a payload of around 675 kg remains. Such a small payload margin on a fire truck shows that the fixed firefighting body, with its pump and equipment, already accounts for a substantial share of the gross vehicle weight, leaving little room for free load.
A fire truck from this early period was built purely for firefighting duty, with a permanently mounted pump and the crew as a significant additional load, rather than for carrying varying goods. The six-cylinder engine was, for a commercial vehicle of this era, a comparatively elaborate unit, aimed at providing enough power for the pump and for driving at the same time.
On a fire truck this old, the state of preservation of the pump and firefighting body, the condition of the frame and spoked wheels, and documentation of the restoration history all matter. Spare parts for a vehicle of this age can practically only be obtained through custom remanufacture or via specialised collectors, which calls for particular care when assessing one.
