Schlepperwerk Nordhausen was a state-owned enterprise of East Germany based in Nordhausen in Thuringia, building tractors as part of the country's centrally planned agricultural machinery production. The RS 04 range followed the works' early post-war models during the 1950s.

The RS 04/30 is powered by a water-cooled two-cylinder engine of 3,012 cc, producing 22.06 kW (30 hp) at 1,500 rpm. At a weight of 2,600 kg, a wheelbase of 2,000 mm and a width of 1,600 mm, the tractor reaches a design top speed of 19 km/h. Height stands at 2,400 mm and length at 3,500 mm. The engine runs on diesel.

A water-cooled two-cylinder of this power class marks a light-to-medium field tractor of the 1950s, the kind used for cereal and root-crop growing on agricultural production cooperatives. The 19 km/h top speed falls within the L driving licence category, and the power take-off on tractors of this era usually ran at 540 rpm, while a three-point hitch was only becoming widespread.

Buying a used two-cylinder this old, the water cooling with its radiator and the tightness of the coolant hoses deserve particular attention. Also worth checking at inspection are the sheet metal for rust damage, the function of the injection pump, tyre condition and the completeness of the original equipment, which on machines this old is often incomplete.
