With an unladen weight under 800 kg and a gross weight of up to 3,000 kg, there is a wide margin for payload between the two figures – typical of working trailers that carry material, machinery or cargo for trades and agriculture behind vans and light commercial vehicles. When buying used, check the chassis and drawbar for rust and distortion, on the two-axle versions also the equalising bearings of the tandem axle for play, the brake system for function and lining thickness, and the load floor and side panels for corrosion through. Spare parts for axles, brakes and coupling on Schalkers trailers, as with most smaller Dutch builders, come from the general trailer-accessories trade. It is also worth checking the tyres and rims for age, tread depth and load rating, the spare wheel or repair kit and on-board tools, and that the chassis number, type plate and vehicle documents all match.
