The 80 series belongs to Renault's two-digit types of the 1980s, built at the Le Mans plant in France; the models covered here, 86, 88 and 89, follow the logic typical of Renault, in which the type number orders size within the range in ascending fashion. In this power class the 80 series competed with comparable mid-range tractors from Fiat, Massey Ferguson and Deutz and was a popular choice in France and French-speaking markets for medium-sized farms.
On a used 80-series tractor, the condition of the clutch and gearbox, rust on the chassis, wings and steps, the tightness of the hydraulics, and the condition of the simple electrics of this era all count; parts for 1980s Renault tractors are available through specialist farm-machinery dealers and the Claas network, which later took over Renault's tractor division. The clutch plate and release bearing are also worth checking, as they can become a costly repair on this range once a certain number of operating hours is reached.
