The eight-cylinder diesel engine of 14.9 litres drives a vehicle 8,930 mm long and 2,500 mm wide on four wheels. With a kerb weight of 12,260 kg and a gross vehicle weight of 17,430 kg, the payload comes to about 5,170 kg, on a wheelbase of just 5,100 mm, short for such a heavy vehicle.
With a gross vehicle weight of 17.4 tonnes, the vehicle falls into class N3 despite having only four wheels. The large 14.9-litre displacement on just two axles reflects the high power demand of the fire pump and the vehicle in action, which calls for a strong, durable drivetrain built to handle sustained high loads during firefighting operations.
When buying a retired fire apparatus chassis of this design used, what matters most is the condition of the pump, tank and body electrics, where these are still fitted. The frame and axles should be checked carefully for wear and cracks given the high axle load on only two axles, and the mounting points of the tank and equipment lockers on the frame deserve the same attention as the drivetrain itself.
