Pentti PPV 2K: an EU class O4 trailer with a gross vehicle weight of 20,000 kg, an unladen weight of 6,600 kg, a length of 8,150 mm and a width of 2,600 mm, built in 1992

With a gross vehicle weight of 20,000 kg, the Pentti PPV 2K falls into EU trailer class O4, the heavy trailers and semi-trailers above 10 tonnes. Vehicles in this class run in long-haul and heavy-duty transport behind suitably approved towing vehicles and are built for sustained loads rather than occasional use.

Built in 1992, the PPV 2K has an unladen weight of 6,600 kg, giving it a payload of around 13,400 kg against its 20,000 kg gross weight. At 8,150 mm long and 2,600 mm wide, it is a long but still road-legal narrow trailer, built for a high ratio of payload to its own weight.

Above 10 tonnes of gross vehicle weight, a simple overrun brake is no longer permitted; class O4 trailers need an air brake system that works together with the towing vehicle's brakes. The towing vehicle and trailer must be matched to the combined train weight, and such a combination is driven with a category CE licence.

On a trailer of this age, the frame and chassis rails deserve particular attention: through-corrosion typically starts at the mountings for axles, suspension and the tow coupling. The brake system should be checked for tightness and even response, and the tyres for flat spots and rubber age regardless of tread depth. Lighting and the underrun guard must be complete, or the next roadworthiness test will fail on that alone.
