With a gross weight of 8,200 kg, the Ortmann SP sits in EU trailer class O3, the 3.5 to 10 tonne band that already requires an air brake system. Trailers in this weight class form the backbone of medium-duty road transport, without yet reaching the dimensions of the heaviest semi-trailers.

At 8,470 mm long and 2,400 mm wide, the SP has an unladen weight of 2,480 kg, giving a payload of around 5,720 kg. Its 4,950 mm wheelbase spreads this load over a chassis of suitably generous length for the class, giving stable handling even close to full load.

In class O3, towing the trailer requires driving licence category BE or C1E depending on the tractor vehicle, once the combined train weight exceeds the relevant national limit. The mandatory air brake system needs an intact supply line from the towing vehicle and regularly serviced brake cylinders so that braking force stays even across the whole load bed.

When buying used, check the air system for leaks at the coupling heads and lines, inspect the axles and suspension under the chassis for play and rust, and look at the load bed for deformation from localised overloading. Given the high payload, the brake drums or discs should also be checked for wear, along with the tyres and the condition of the drawbar and coupling eye at the front of the trailer.
