The 60 HC/KD is powered by a water-cooled four-cylinder engine of just under 2 litres, built to run on petrol or kerosene, delivering 14 kW at 1,500 rpm, roughly 19 hp. At an unladen weight of 839 kg, a height of 1,822 mm, a length of 3,092 mm and a wheelbase of 1,676 mm, the machine has a design top speed of 19 km/h.
The ability to switch to kerosene was common in the 1940s because kerosene was cheaper than petrol in many regions; the engine usually needed a separate carburettor or a fuel pre-heating stage for it. The relatively modest output per litre at low speed was typical of 1940s tractor engines and gave high torque even in the lower rev range; at around 14 kW, the 60 Series was built for smaller farms and light drawbar work.
When buying an Oliver tractor of this age, check the carburettor and ignition system, the tightness of the cooling system and wear on clutch and gearbox. The condition of the tyres and rims also deserves attention, since replacements in the original size have become scarce; spare parts for American vintage tractors are available through specialist dealers, but their availability should be confirmed before purchase.
