Nfp TAF 18: compact heavy-duty trailer in EU class O4 with an 18,000 kg gross weight, 7,760 mm length, 2,460 mm width and a 11,700 kg payload for building materials and machinery

The TAF 18 from Nfp is a compact heavy-duty trailer with a gross weight of 18,000 kg. It falls into EU trailer class O4, the heavy trailers above 10 tonnes that require their own air braking system. Despite its relatively short length, the trailer combines high load capacity with compact dimensions.

At a length of 7,760 mm and a width of 2,460 mm, the empty chassis weighs 6,300 kg, leaving a payload of 11,700 kg for cargo – considerably more than the trailer's own weight. This combination of a short build and high load capacity is typical of tippers and flatbed trailers carrying heavy but compact goods such as building materials, bulk material or smaller construction machinery. The trailer was registered in 2007.

Trailers in this weight class run on air brakes on all axles and require a towing vehicle with a sufficiently high permitted trailer load and a matching compressed-air supply. The short build keeps the turning circle small, which is an advantage on building sites and in narrow yards, while the high payload demands full use of the permitted axle loads.

When buying used, check the frame and axles: under sustained high axle loads, fatigue cracks appear first at the welds of the axle mounts. Equally important are the condition of the brake drums or discs, the tightness of the air lines and, where fitted, the state of the tipping mechanism and hydraulic cylinders, which are particularly prone to wear on tipper trailers.
