A rotary tedder such as the ProTed 880T lifts mown forage using several tine rotors driven through a gearbox, throwing it loosely to the rear while turning it over. Damp material is brought from the bottom to the top this way, aerated and dried more evenly before being raked into a swath. The tines sit on pivoting arms guided around a cam track inside each rotor, lifting the crop off the ground without working it into the soil.
Size is set by the number of rotors and working width, which needs to match tractor power and field width. On the road, the trailed implement is subject to the general rules on width, lighting and marking while raised.
On a used machine, what counts is wear on the tines for abrasion and breakage, the condition of the tine arms and their bearings in the cam track, the tightness of the rotor gearboxes against oil leaks, and any distortion in the frame and lifting linkage. Guards and gauge wheels also belong on the checklist. The condition of the PTO drive shaft and its guard tube, along with a look at the mounting brackets on the tractor, round out the inspection.
