Minerva Jeep quarter-ton 4x4 as a Belgian licence-built vehicle: four-cylinder engine, 1,380 kg kerb weight and a 2,030 mm wheelbase for off-road use
Minerva was a Belgian vehicle manufacturer that, in the early 1950s, built light off-road vehicles under licence modelled on the American Willys Jeep. The designation "1/4T 4X4" stands for the quarter-ton payload class and the four-wheel drive used on the original Jeep operated by US armed forces.

The four-cylinder engine powers a vehicle with a 1,380 kg kerb weight, which allows 440 kg of payload at a gross vehicle weight of 1,820 kg — close to the quarter-ton payload the name refers to. With a 2,030 mm wheelbase, a width of 1,580 mm and permanent four-wheel drive, the vehicle is built compact and agile, as its off-road purpose requires.
Light four-wheel-drive off-roaders of this type were designed for military and official use on unpaved terrain: a short wheelbase, high ground clearance and simple mechanics took priority over ride comfort or high cruising speed. On most vehicles of this type, four-wheel drive can be engaged, switching between rear-wheel and four-wheel operation.
When buying a historic licence-built Jeep of this kind, the condition of the frame and axle suspension matters most, since vehicles of this type were often driven off-road and have accordingly experienced high loads. The seals on the transfer case and axles should also be checked for leaks, as should the condition of the electrics, which are often modified on vehicles of this age.
