Mercedes-Benz Unimog 424: the Unimog U 1200 was a six-cylinder implement carrier built from 1976 to 1988 with a 5,675 cm³ engine, 125 hp (92 kW) at 2,600 rpm and a top speed of around 80 km/h
The Unimog has been part of the Mercedes-Benz range since the 1950s as an off-road universal implement carrier for agriculture, construction and municipal service. The U 1200 in the Unimog 424 series was built from 1976 to 1988 and counted among the medium-weight versions of that generation.

The six-cylinder engine displaces 5,675 cm³ and produces 125 hp, or 92 kW, at 2,600 rpm, is water-cooled, and gives a top speed of around 80 km/h. On a 2,650 mm wheelbase and with a gross weight rating of 7,500 kg, the U 1200 weighs 4,500 kg unladen, measuring 4,540 mm in length, 2,100 mm in width and 3,415 mm in height, running on four wheels.
With its gross weight rating well above its unladen weight, the U 1200 offers ample payload reserve for attachments and bodywork, typical of the Unimog's implement-carrier concept, in which power take-offs and hydraulic couplings front and rear allow it to switch between roles. Its power take-off runs at the standardised speeds of 540 or 1,000 rpm, so that commercially available farm and municipal attachments can be fitted.
When buying a used example, check the condition of the portal axle gearboxes, rust on the ladder frame, the tightness of the hydraulic couplings, and the condition of the clutch and gearbox in a machine of this age. Spare parts remain well available through the active Unimog scene.
