Mercedes Benz Vaneo

Mercedes-Benz Vaneo 1.7 CDI of 2003: the compact van of class N1 on an A-Class base with a four-cylinder diesel engine, 1,689 cm³ displacement, 67 kW power and a five-speed gearbox
Mercedes-Benz launched the Vaneo as a compact van based on the A-Class, to give itself a badge-engineered-free entry with the star in the small-van segment alongside rivals such as the Renault Kangoo or Opel Meriva. Unlike the later Citan, the Vaneo was a genuine Mercedes model with A-Class technology, not a rebadged vehicle from another maker.

The Vaneo recorded here from 2003 carries the 1.7 CDI engine: a four-cylinder diesel of 1,689 cm³ and 67 kW, paired with a five-speed manual gearbox. With a gross weight of 1,980 kg and a kerb weight of 1,350 kg, a payload of about 630 kg remains. The length of 4,200 mm and width of 1,742 mm show the compact dimensions of a van meant to combine family friendliness with a size still suited to the city.
As a vehicle with a gross weight well under 3.5 tonnes, the Vaneo belongs to class N1, or, in passenger-car registration, to the multi-purpose vehicles that combined load volume with a flexible interior concept of individual, sliding seats – a concept that followed the compact-van trend of the early 2000s.
When buying second-hand, what counts is the condition of the timing chain or timing belt depending on the engine variant, wear on the sliding individual seats and their rails, the condition of the turbocharger and intercooler hoses, and, as with all A-Class models of this generation, corrosion at the wheel arches and around the tailgate.
