Mercedes-Benz GL – the large seven-seat SUV range from the GL320 CDI to the GL500: 4Matic all-wheel drive, six- and eight-cylinder engines, 165 to 225 kW
The Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is the brand's large seven-seat SUV, built in two generations (X164 and X166) from 2006 to 2015 at the Tuscaloosa plant in Alabama, before being continued as the GLS. The type designation follows the Mercedes pattern: the number gives the rounded displacement in tenths of a litre, CDI stands for diesel common-rail direct injection, and 4Matic for the permanent four-wheel drive fitted to every model. The second-generation X166 replaced the X164 in 2012 and brought a lighter aluminium-steel mixed body construction along with revised engines.

With the GL-Class, Mercedes-Benz positioned itself against the BMW X5, Audi Q7 and Range Rover in the segment of large luxury SUVs with a third row of seats; it was most successful in North America and the Middle East, where large seven-seat off-roaders are in demand as both a family and a representative vehicle.
On a used purchase, the condition of the air suspension, the tightness of the transfer case and differentials, rust on the sills and – on the diesel engines – the condition of the turbocharger and exhaust-gas recirculation count; parts are available through the Mercedes-Benz network.
