The Citan is Mercedes-Benz's compact van for urban and delivery work, built technically on the Renault Kangoo: the first generation (W415) launched in 2012, and since 2021 the second generation (W420) has used the new Kangoo platform. Both generations are built by Renault in Maubeuge in northern France and shipped from there as Mercedes-Benz Citans. CDI denotes the common-rail diesel engines, Tourer the passenger version with rear seats and windows all round. The register also carries “Kassevogn”, the Scandinavian term for the closed panel-van body, and “lang” marks the long-wheelbase version.

The Citan competes in the small-van segment with the VW Caddy and Ford Transit Connect, and shares its technical base directly with the Kangoo, which eases servicing and parts supply. As a Tourer it also serves as a compact family and fleet car, as a van as a delivery vehicle for trades and parcel services.
On a used example the usual small-CDI concerns apply: the condition of the EGR valve and particulate filter, timing chain or belt depending on the engine, and the multiplex electrics shared with the Kangoo. Corrosion mainly affects the load-sill protection and door seams; parts run through both the Mercedes van and the Renault network.
