Mercedes-Benz Tractors TRAC – the MB-trac from Gaggenau, built 1973 to 1991: an implement carrier with front and rear linkage, four- and six-cylinder diesels, 53 to 115 kW, 3,515 to 9,000 kg unladen weight

The MB-trac was built from 1973 to 1991 at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Gaggenau and designed as an implement carrier: unlike a conventional farm tractor it has mounting points and power take-offs at both front and rear, making it suitable for agricultural and municipal work as well as transport and road-building tasks. The number in designations such as MB TRAC 800, 1000, 1500 and 1600 follows engine output in metric horsepower, with the full model name reading MB-trac; the versions gathered here range from the smaller MB TRAC 440 to the powerful turbocharged MB TRAC 1600.

The register lists here 7 versions with 53 to 115 kW from four- to six-cylinder diesel engines of 3,780 to 5,950 cm³ displacement, torque from 324 to 530 Nm at 2,400 to 2,550 rpm, unladen weights from 3,515 to 9,000 kg, gross weights from 6,000 to 10,000 kg, lengths from 4,480 to 6,700 mm, widths from 2,120 to 2,500 mm and heights from 2,930 to 3,050 mm.

Through the 1970s and 1980s the MB-trac occupied a niche between a conventional farm tractor and a truck: equal-sized wheels on both axles and the ability to mount implements at either end made it a versatile working machine for larger farms, agricultural contractors and municipal depots, where alongside fieldwork it was also used for transport and clearing duties.

On used examples, the condition of the front and rear hydraulics with their power take-offs, the tightness of the engine and turbocharger, the condition of the clutch and gearbox, rust on the frame and matching tyres on both axles all matter; spare parts today run mainly through specialist MB-trac dealers and an active collector and enthusiast scene.
