This page gathers Mercedes-Benz chassis of the 408 to 1313 series that served as the basis for fire engines of the German fire brigades. The type designation follows the classic factory scheme of the 1970s and 1980s: the first one or two digits give the gross vehicle weight in tonnes, the following two the engine output in hp divided by ten, B denotes a petrol and D a diesel engine – the LF 608 D a six-tonne chassis with about 80 hp diesel, the LF 1113 B an eleven-tonne chassis with about 130 hp petrol. The chassis were built at the Wörth am Rhein plant, Mercedes-Benz's main truck works since 1965.

The register lists 22 versions with 81 to 122 kW from four- to six-cylinders of 2,172 to 5,670 cm³, unladen weights from 1,843 to 12,930 kg, gross weights from 3,500 to 14,000 kg, lengths from 5,100 to 9,920 mm and widths from 2,050 to 2,500 mm.

Bodybuilders such as Metz, Magirus, Ziegler and Schlingmann fitted these chassis with fire engine bodies that for decades formed the backbone of Germany's volunteer and professional fire brigades, with crew cab, pump and water tank on the chassis.

On used examples, rust on frame and cab, the condition of pump and bodywork, mileage and the service book count, and on the diesel engines the injection pump and clutch; parts for chassis and engine run through the classic Mercedes-Benz truck network, and for the fire-service bodywork through the respective bodybuilders.
