The Mengele MT 800 falls into EU trailer category O3 with a gross weight of 8,000 kg, the band between 3.5 and 10 tonnes in which trailers are mostly fitted with their own compressed-air braking system rather than a simple overrun brake.

At 6,980 mm long and 2,010 mm wide, the MT 800 weighs 2,600 kg unladen, leaving 5,400 kg of payload against the permitted 8,000 kg – more than two-thirds of the gross weight. That gives a payload share of around 68 percent of the gross weight.

Such a high payload share on a comparatively compact trailer points to dense, heavy cargo such as harvested produce, building materials or machine parts rather than bulky, light freight. Towing a trailer of this weight normally requires at least licence category C1E, since the gross weight is well beyond the limits of categories B and BE. Under EU rules, O3 and O4 trailers must carry retroreflective contour markings at the rear and along the sides.

When buying used, check the brake lines for corrosion, the coupling and drawbar for wear, and the axle mounts for play. Also inspect the frame around the hitch and the tyres, which carry the full load whenever the high payload share is actually used. After a test drive it is also worth checking that the wheel nuts are properly torqued and inspecting the tyre tread depth.
