The Farmall D line was launched in the 1950s at the International Harvester plant in Neuss on the Rhine and comprises the DED 3, DGD 4 and DLD 2 models. The designation follows a letter scheme from the IHC system: D stands for the diesel version, the second and third positions for build size and equipment, and the final digit for the cylinder count.

The register lists 3 versions with 10.3 to 22.1 kW (14 to 30 hp) from two- to four-cylinders of 1,088 to 2,178 cc displacement at rated speeds between 1,750 and 1,800 rpm. Maximum torque ranges from 58 to 123 Nm. Operating weight ranges from 820 to 1,730 kg, length from 2,461 to 2,834 mm, width from 1,540 to 1,630 mm and height from 1,550 to 1,585 mm. All three models run on diesel.
With the D line, International Harvester set up its post-war European diesel programme for small and medium-sized farms, built specifically for the European market at the Rhineland plant in Neuss rather than imported from the US. The span from two- to four-cylinders thereby covered different farm sizes within a single shared range.
On a used purchase of these historic diesel tractors, points to check include the condition of the injection pump and nozzles, the tightness of the radiator and water pump, wear on the clutch and gearbox, and corrosion on the chassis and sheet-metal parts. Spare parts for the D line are found through vintage dealers specialising in International Harvester.
