Mccormick Deering W-40 Baureihe
1 model in this series
McCormick-Deering W-40 of the W-40 series (IHC): a water-cooled four-cylinder standard tractor with a diesel engine producing 38.2 kW (52 hp), built 1935 to 1940, weighing 3,425 kg, with a top speed of 19.5 km/h.
The W-40 was a standard-tread tractor from International Harvester (McCormick-Deering), built between 1935 and 1940. Unlike the narrow-track row-crop tractors of the F series, it had a rigid frame with axles of similar height, built for general field work.

The W-40 is powered by a water-cooled four-cylinder International engine with 7,550 cm3 displacement, producing 38.2 kW (52 hp) at a rated speed of 1,100 to 1,200 rpm. Running on diesel fuel, it was unusual for its time, since most farm tractors of the 1930s still ran on petrol or kerosene. At 3,425 kg, with a wheelbase of 2,159 mm and a top speed of 19.5 km/h, it is noticeably heavier and slower than the brand's small row-crop tractors.
As an early diesel-powered standard tractor, the W-40 represented the beginning of the shift from petrol and kerosene to the more economical diesel fuel in late-1930s American farming. With over 7.5 litres of displacement at a low rated speed, the engine was built for high torque in soil cultivation and belt-pulley work rather than for high road speed.
When buying a 1930s W-40, the injection pump of the early diesel engine is the most critical point, since spare parts for this design are rare and mostly found through specialist vintage-tractor restorers. Also check the radiator and water pump of the liquid cooling system, along with the frame and axle bearings for wear after decades of use, as is typical for standard tractors of this weight class.
