McLouis ZGVF of 2005: a motorhome from the French leisure-vehicle maker McLouis on a light-commercial-vehicle chassis with a 1,997 cm³ four-cylinder diesel engine, 3,000 kg gross weight and 2,395 kg kerb weight
McLouis is a French motorhome manufacturer based in France that builds its vehicles on light-commercial-vehicle chassis, as is customary in the motorhome trade. The ZGVF recorded here shows exactly this principle: a living body on a class N1 chassis, providing the base for kitchen, seating and sleeping area instead of a cargo compartment for freight.

The vehicle from 2005 carries a four-cylinder diesel engine of 1,997 cm³, also common in light vans of this weight class. With a gross weight of 3,000 kg and a kerb weight of 2,395 kg, about 605 kg remains for passengers, water, gas and equipment – a tight but, for this chassis type, plausible reserve for a motorhome. The wheelbase of 3,180 mm and width of 2,280 mm match a compact motorhome.
Motorhomes on a class N1 chassis may be driven on a category B licence as long as the gross weight of 3.5 tonnes is not exceeded – here, at 3,000 kg, still with some margin for accessories and load. Unlike a plain panel van, in a motorhome the interior fit-out determines how much of the permitted payload is left for the actual touring equipment.
When buying a motorhome around twenty years old, what counts above all is damp and mould in the body, especially at roof and window seals, the condition of the gas and water systems, corrosion on the chassis in the underbody area, and the engine condition and mileage of the underlying commercial vehicle.
