Mbt EMO7900: O3-class EU trailer with a 7,900 kg gross weight, 2,540 kg unladen weight, 5,360 kg payload and around 3,940 mm wheelbase

The Mbt EMO7900 falls into EU trailer category O3 with a gross weight of 7,900 kg, the band between 3.5 and 10 tonnes in which trailers are mostly fitted with their own compressed-air braking system rather than a simple overrun brake.

At 7,550 mm long and 2,270 mm wide, the EMO7900 weighs 2,540 kg unladen, leaving 5,360 kg of payload against the permitted 7,900 kg. The wheelbase is around 3,940 mm, a little over half the overall length, as expected for a multi-axle chassis of this size. That gives a payload share of around 68 percent of the gross weight.

With a payload share of more than two-thirds, the trailer is built for heavy, dense cargo such as building materials, machine parts or bulk goods rather than bulky, light loads. Towing a trailer of this weight normally requires at least licence category C1E, since the gross weight is well beyond the limits of categories B and BE. Under EU rules, O3 and O4 trailers must carry retroreflective contour markings at the rear and along the sides.

When buying used, pay particular attention to the compressed-air braking system and its lines, the coupling heads, axle play and the frame for cracking around the trailer hitch. At this payload share, sustained overloading tends to show up first in the springs and axle stubs. After a test drive it is also worth checking that the wheel nuts are properly torqued and inspecting the tyre tread depth.
