MAN, the Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg, is known chiefly as a manufacturer of trucks, buses and diesel engines. In the 1950s its programme also included agricultural tractors for a few years under the D series, into which MAN brought its experience in diesel-engine building.

The D 40 Allrad, built in 1956 and 1957, is powered by a water-cooled four-cylinder diesel engine of 3,473 cm³ displacement, producing 40 hp, equivalent to 29.3 kW, at 1,800 rpm. Gross weight is 2,530 kg and top speed is 18.4 km/h, giving a power-to-weight figure of roughly 63.3 kg per hp. At 3,620 mm long, 1,865 mm wide, 1,930 mm high and with a wheelbase of 2,215 mm, the D 40 is a mid-sized tractor.
At 18.4 km/h the D 40 falls into licence class L. What gives the model its name, and makes it technically notable, is its four-wheel drive, still the exception for tractors of this size in the 1950s, which provides extra traction on loose or difficult ground where a rear-wheel-drive tractor of the same power would reach its limits.
When buying such a rare four-wheel-drive agricultural tractor the front-axle drivetrain is the main focus: transfer gearbox, drive shafts and front-axle bearings are structurally more complex than on a standard tractor and, from a manufacturer that gave up tractor production long ago, hard to replace. The cooling system should also be checked for corrosion, along with the gearbox, clutch and the general rust condition.
