The NO is powered by a Mack EY engine rated at 159 hp (118.6 kW). Power runs through a five-speed gearbox with an engageable transfer case and low-range gearing, needed for hauling heavy trailed loads over rough ground.
As a prime mover for heavy field guns, the NO had to offer cross-country ability above all else: six-wheel drive and the two-stage transfer case allowed operation off sealed roads, while the closed cab protected the crew. Vehicles of this type formed the backbone of motorised artillery logistics of their time.
On a surviving NO, check the transfer case and axles for wear after decades of use, the brakes for even operation across all axles, and the chassis frame for cracking around the towing hitch. Parts for the Mack EY engine and gearbox are best found through restorers specialising in historic military vehicles. Heavy tractor-and-gun combinations of this kind remained in military service with a number of armed forces long after the war ended, which explains why running examples still turn up with collectors today.
