Mack Junior 21MB of 1937: the light lorry from the US maker Mack Trucks with a six-cylinder engine, 3,736 cm³ displacement, 3,489 kg gross weight and 2,370 kg kerb weight
Mack Trucks is a US lorry manufacturer originating in Brooklyn, New York, known above all for heavy trucks. The Junior 21MB recorded here from 1937 carries a six-cylinder engine of 3,736 cm³, a strong unit for a light lorry of its day. With a gross weight of 3,489 kg and a kerb weight of 2,370 kg, this gives a payload of about 1,119 kg. The wheelbase of 4,220 mm and width of 2,080 mm show a chassis that was long but narrow by 1930s standards, as flatbed and box bodies of this class required.
With a gross weight just under 3.5 tonnes, the Junior 21MB sits in the class that would correspond to today's N1, the light commercial vehicle for trade and business. The six-cylinder engine, with comparatively large displacement against four-cylinder rivals of its time, points to smooth running and pulling power at moderate revolutions, valued in distribution work.
When buying a pre-war lorry of this kind, what counts above all is the condition of the frame and its riveted joints, corrosion on the wings and cab, the function of the mechanical brakes without modern assistance, and the availability of spare parts, which for a vehicle of this age can now only be found through collectors and specialists in historic commercial vehicles.
