Lorain cranes worked in North America on construction sites, in civil engineering and in industry as self-propelled telescopic and lattice-boom cranes, competing with makers such as American, Bucyrus-Erie and Grove.

On these mobile cranes, the condition and inspection history of the boom and rope winches, the hydraulic system and cylinders, the outriggers, brakes and running gear, and the load test under the applicable crane regulations all count; parts for the older ranges today are usually only obtainable second-hand or through reproduction.

Given a gross vehicle weight of 18,140 to 24,500 kg, these mobile cranes would fall into EU class N3 (over 12 t), even though they operated as truck-mounted cranes rather than classic trucks with a load bed; driving them on public roads therefore also required a truck driving licence and the equipment obligations typical of trucks in this class. Surviving examples from these model years mostly run on historic-vehicle plates today.
