Lindner S14: early mountain tractor from Kundl in Tyrol, built between 1948 and 1950, single-cylinder diesel of 1,300 cm³ with evaporative cooling, 14 hp at 1,200 rpm
Lindner, based in Kundl in Tyrol, was among the first manufacturers to build small tractors for mountain farms again after the war. The S14 is one of these early models and was in the range from 1948 to 1950, in the first years of reconstruction, when domestically built farm machinery was in particularly high demand.

The single-cylinder diesel engine of 1,300 cm³ displacement uses evaporative cooling and produces 14 hp, equivalent to 10 kW, at 1,200 rpm. Gross weight is 1,095 kg and top speed is 15 km/h, giving a power-to-weight figure of roughly 78.2 kg per hp. At 2,400 mm long, 1,380 mm wide and 1,600 mm high, the S14 is a small, tall-built single-cylinder tractor.
At 15 km/h the S14 falls into licence class L. The low engine speed of 1,200 rpm and the single-cylinder layout point to a deliberately simple, rugged design of the kind needed in the immediate post-war years, when spare parts were scarce, workshops few, and a tractor above all had to be reliable and easy to repair.
When buying such an old single-cylinder tractor, the condition of the evaporative cooling matters most, since it works without a pump and quickly loses effect if deposits build up in the cooling space. The cylinder should also be checked for wear, the sheet-metal parts for rust-through, the front-axle bearings inspected, and spare parts considered, which for this rare model now practically only come from collector circles.
