Lindner Junior HRL 9: small mountain tractor from Kundl in Tyrol, built between 1957 and 1962, water-cooled single-cylinder diesel of 502 cm³ producing 9 hp at 2,000 rpm
Lindner, based in Kundl in Tyrol, built small, light tractors in the post-war years for mountain farms that had to work on narrow plots of grassland, orchards and vineyards. The Junior HRL 9 belongs to this line of the smallest mountain tractors and was in the range from 1957 to 1962, at a time when many alpine holdings were switching from draught animals to engine power for the first time.

The single-cylinder diesel engine of 502 cm³ displacement is water-cooled and produces 9 hp, equivalent to 6.6 kW, at 2,000 rpm. Gross weight is just 798 kg and top speed is 15 km/h, giving a power-to-weight figure of almost 88.7 kg per hp, a typically high value for such a small single-cylinder tractor. At 2,230 mm long, 1,270 mm wide, 1,165 mm high and with a wheelbase of 1,440 mm, the Junior ranks among the smallest designs of its era.
With a top speed of 15 km/h the Junior HRL 9 falls into licence class L. The narrow, low build was deliberately tailored to narrow tracks, terraces and row spacing on steep slopes where larger tractors could not turn, making it a tool for holdings that could not do without a tractor but had no room for a large one either.
When buying such an old small tractor, the condition of the cooling system matters most, since corrosion in the radiator and water channels is common after decades. Sheet-metal parts should also be checked for rust-through, the simple electrics tested for function, the front-axle bearings inspected, and spare parts considered, which for this rare model now practically only come from salvaged units or reproductions.
