Heinrich Lanz AG, with its plant in Mannheim, became known above all for the Bulldog, its single-cylinder hot-bulb tractor. In 1956 John Deere took over the company and initially continued the Lanz marque. This page collects the D series, from the D 1106 to the D 2016; the D designation stands for diesel, with the number denoting power and size class.

The register lists 2 versions from 11 to 20 hp (8.1 to 14.6 kW) from single-cylinder diesel engines of 533 to 2,256 cm³ displacement at 950 rpm. Kerb weights range from 770 to 1,440 kg, lengths from 2,440 to 2,775 mm, widths from 1,450 to 1,667 mm and heights from 1,385 to 2,270 mm.
Tractors of this power class handled basic tillage and yard haulage on smaller and medium-sized farms, standing at the transition from the Bulldog era to modern diesel technology, with which Lanz and later John Deere-Lanz competed against the established German brands. The switch from the single-cylinder hot-bulb engine to a classic single-cylinder diesel made starting easier and running more economical, without the pre-heating time needed by the Bulldog predecessors.
When buying a used example, check the condition of injection pump and cylinder head, the tightness of clutch and gearbox, wear on steering and front axle, and corrosion on the bodywork and wings; spare parts through the John Deere successor organisation are available only to a limited extent, but comparatively well through specialist Lanz parts dealers. It is also worth checking the coolant lines and the condition of the belt pulley used for stationary drive applications.
