Lanz, in full Heinrich Lanz AG, was based in Mannheim. The SLL of the B series dates from 1907 to 1918, the period before the 1921 Bulldog for which the company later became known. Drive runs solely through the rear wheels; there was as yet no driven front axle of the kind later four-wheel-drive tractors would have.

The SLL carries a water-cooled single-cylinder engine run on coal, producing 20.5 kW, or 28 hp, at only 200 rpm. The machine weighs 9,100 kg and rolls on tyres measuring 1,100 by 200 mm at the front and 1,700 by 450 mm at the rear, dimensions pointing to large, solid wheels rather than today's rubber tyres.

Coal-fired drive relied on gas generated from the fuel in its own generator, a common alternative before the First World War to imported liquid fuels. At only 200 rpm the engine runs far slower than later diesel or Bulldog drives, generating its torque from the sheer mass of its moving parts rather than from speed.

A machine of this age and character today is above all an object of historic-technology preservation, not a working implement any more. When acquiring one, the originality of the gas plant and carburettor, the condition of the wheel spokes and rims for cracks, and confirmation that no modern, non-period conversions have been made to the drivetrain all matter for its value.
