Lamborghini Trattori built the SLH 56 Series at its Pieve di Cento plant near Bologna; the four models R-1156, R-1256, R-1356 and R-1556 all carry the DT (Doppia Trazione) designation for the four-wheel-drive version. All versions run six-cylinder diesel engines between 6.2 and 6.8 litres displacement. Ferruccio Lamborghini sold the tractor division to SAME in 1972, which continued production at Pieve di Cento and still assembles Lamborghini tractors there today.

As large six-cylinder tractors, the SLH 56 Series occupied Lamborghini's upper power segment; the marque has belonged to the SAME Group since the 1970s and later to the SDF Group, sharing the same engine and transmission technology as Same and Hürlimann. Within the SDF Group, Lamborghini shares engines, transmissions and axles with its sister brands, while retaining its own cab and body styling.
When buying used, check the hours and service history of the six-cylinder, the condition of clutch and gearbox, the tightness of the hydraulics, and the drive hub and front axle on DT versions. Parts run through the SDF Group dealer network. as well as the brakes, steering and cab-suspension seals.
