Boat trailers form a body style of their own within the light to medium trailer segment. They are built for launching and recovering watercraft, often carry a multi-axle chassis with a low loading height, and are pulled exclusively behind cars or light commercial vehicles.

The 3500 Boottrailer takes its name from its gross weight of 3,500 kg. Against an unladen weight of 870 kg that leaves a payload of 2,630 kg for boat and gear. The load runs on six wheels, consistent with a triple-axle layout, at a width of 2,330 mm. Within the axle group the spacing is around 1,460 mm – that is the gap between the closely set axles, not the wheelbase of the whole trailer.

At exactly 3,500 kg gross weight the trailer sits at the top of EU trailer class O2, usually built with an overrun brake rather than an air system. Towing it needs licence category B or BE depending on the combined weight of the outfit, while the three axles spread the load evenly during launching on a ramp.

On a used boat trailer, check the bearings of all six wheels first for water ingress, since they are regularly submerged during launching. The overrun mechanism, brake cables and keel-support rollers must move freely and be free of rust, and the chassis deserves a close check for corrosion under the galvanising given its constant contact with fresh or salt water.
